Neurodegenerative disease is an umbrella term for conditions characterized by progressive nervous system dysfunction. Some doctors argue over whether MS is primarily an autoimmune disease or an inflammatory response to a neurodegenerative process. You care about the answer because it might influence future treatments. But you also don't care, because whatever they call it, it's still not awesome.
